Skin-Transforming Face Masks You Can Make Out of Food

Updated: Jun 24, 2021

If you know what you're doing — and that can be a fairly huge if — then your refrigerator can stock some pretty impressive skin care recipes After all, just think about all of the nourishing vitamins and minerals found in fruit and vegetables. Let's see: There's vitamin C in lemons and oranges, vitamin E and A in avocados, calcium and potassium in bananas... you get the picture. Knowing this, we took the liberty of perusing the produce section and talking to skin-care experts, who kindly helped us come up with some seriously awesome recipe ideas for face masks. No matter what your skin-care concern, we've got you covered.

For Acne-Prone Skin: Banana

Ingredients:

  • 1 mashed banana

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

If you have mild to moderate acne you might want to incorporate this mask into your regular routine. "Bananas are packed with vitamin A which promotes skin-cell turnover and helps pores stay clean, And while the turmeric powder wards off acne-causing bacteria, the baking soda absorbs the excess oil in your skin.

For Dry Skin: Avocado

Ingredients:

  • 1 avocado

  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon honey

Add hydration back into rough, dry skin with this moisturizing mask. "The omega fatty acid in avocado and olive Oil help seal cracks between skin cells, And thanks to soothing ingredients, like honey and yogurt your skin will feel incredibly soft and plump — if not a little sticky. Just be sure to rinse well around the hairline.

For Dull Skin: Papaya

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup mashed papaya

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • 1 whipped egg white

If you're searching for a brighter, more glowing complexion — and why wouldn't you be? — try this baby. The enzymes in the papaya are a natural exfoliator, so they go to work sloughing off dead skin cells, while the honey and egg white bind the mask together.

For Rough Skin: Cucumber

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cucumber, pureed in a food processor

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

It is cooling, reduces redness and smells so good that you will feel — for a moment — like you're in a spa, not your kitchen. This mask exfoliates gently and leaves the skin noticeably softer after just one use.

For Tired Skin: Lemon

Ingredients:

  • Juice of 1 lemon

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Dewy, refreshed, and calm. That's what we're going for here. The sugar and lemon work together to exfoliate dead skin cells, while the olive oil hydrates and restores your skin to a healthy, fresher, happier place.

For Sensitive Skin: Yogurt

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon yogurt

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

For sensitive-skin types who experience redness, yogurt is the optimal base for a face mask: It's rich in probiotics and soothing skin proteins. Flavanols (like the ones you're adding in the form of cocoa powder) calm irritation, while honey tightens the skin. It's a gentle yet mighty trifecta.

For Oily Skin: Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal, cooled (duh)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

The acid in the lemon juice goes to work removing excess oil and dead skin cells (it's all those alpha hydroxyl Acids packed in there); meanwhile, the oatmeal soothes the skin and calms any patches of redne
